Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar is beign chock by toxic air, in December 2016 experienced pollution level is 5 times higher than Beijing’s pollution. This is partly because of its location. Ulaanbaatar is situated in a river valley surrounded by mountains, which tends to trap pollution because of its location the pollution may stuck in this city only, by blocking out wind that cloud potentially disperse the pollutants.

It would be less of the problem if the city did not burn so much coal. Winter temperature can drop to 40’F. Forcing residents to burn a lot of coal to stay warm. Environmental groups are working to introduce electric heating to poorer households but there is long way to go. Emissions need to be reduced by 94% for the air quality to be manageable and there is another factor is population too. If we talk about the population of the Ulaanbaatar, its population as of 2014 was over 1.3 million, almost half of the country’s total population.
